Film and Religion Series: The Trial of John of Arc
Director: Robert Bresson 1962
In 1431, Jeanne, a French peasant girl, is imprisoned for heresy and brought to trial in Rouen. Despite rigorous interrogation by the judges and constant persecution by the jailers, her faith remains unshaken. The relentless theological questioning and argument in court is broken only by an ineffective attempt at torture and an examination to prove her virginity. The English, who are eager to destroy the legend already building around her, mock Joan's insistence that her military enterprises were ordained by God.
